304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings

A procurement guide to material selection, corrosion environment and custom fitting confirmation.

Use this guide to prepare a clearer technical request. Final manufacturing feasibility is confirmed against the complete RFQ, drawings and project specification.

Start with the environment

Material selection depends on fluid chemistry, temperature, cleaning practice and external exposure rather than grade name alone.

Understand the practical difference

316 stainless steel contains molybdenum and is often considered where chloride exposure is more demanding. It is not universally immune to corrosion.

Match casting and wrought designations

CF8 and CF8M are cast stainless designations commonly associated with 304- and 316-type chemistry. Confirm the product route and required specification.

Control mixed-material risks

Consider mating materials, crevices, deposits, welding, surface condition and cleaning because these can change corrosion performance.

Send complete requirements

State grade, product form, dimensions, thread, medium, temperature, finish, inspection and documentation in the RFQ.
